TMJ Treatment

What is TMJ?

Many people suffer from such common ailments as persistent headaches, jaw pain, neck or shoulder pain, ringing in the ears and popping of the jaw. Others snore, grind their teeth or have limited jaw movement. Although these symptoms may be common, they are not necessarily untreatable.

Often, the underlying cause of these symptoms is called TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome) or TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder). This disorder often occurs when the teeth do not close together properly, including underbites and overbites. The misalignment of the teeth causes the jaw muscles to strain and force the jaw into better alignment. This constant straining leads to pain or other symptoms throughout the head and neck area.

Imagine forcing your arm and wrist into an awkward position to reach down a drain or under a sink. Now, imagine doing that consistently each day. Although your body may become accustomed to the abuse, you will eventually manifest symptoms of overuse, including joint and muscle pain. TMJ is the same type of disfunction due to inappropriate use of your jaw muscles.

Drs. Kreg and Sheri are both passionate about treatments that resolve more than just superficial symptoms. We have a shared interest with you, the patient, to create a healthy, fully functional smile, free of systemic dysfunction. As such, we are experienced with the treatment of many TMJ-related symptoms. Drs. Kreg and Sheri are both alumni of the Dawson Center for Advance Dental Study. Additionally, Dr. Kreg completed a year-long study with the Piper Clinic in 2007. The Piper Clinic is world-renowned in diagnosis and treatment of the Temporomandibular Joint. We are excited about the ability to use advanced imaging techniques such as CT and MRI scans. Many times these scans demonstrate a structural issue with your joint we can address in your treatment. For too long, TMJ treatment has revolved around psychological treatment. Chances are your husband, wife, job, etc. is not the cause of your TMJ. Imaging shows this nicely. Just as if you had a torn ACL in your knee, it is a structural issue, not a psychological one – unless it goes untreated or if previous doctors told you it is a mental issue. Stress can be important in the management of your discomfort or tooth wear but it is not the original cause. Dr. Kreg Boynton is also a member of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain and has the ability to do trigger point injections to relieve your pain and accurately diagnosis where your pain is coming from. Additionally, Dr. Kreg enrolled in a year-long study with the Piper Clinic in 2007. We are excited about the ability to use advanced imaging techniques such as CT and MRI scans. If you have issues with you teeth, gums, joint or muscles, than we are likely the dental practice for you.
